Around the stable, Cal is on the whole a very amiable and friendly horse.  He has quickly discovered that if he whiffles your hair if you stop to say hello, he will get a lovely treat!  He can be very cheeky but it is more mischief than bad temper.  On the other hand, if Cal doesn't get his own way or is asked to do something in a lesson he doesn't want to he is apt to rear and buck.  He isn't great with other horses either as he tried to bite and kick Dusk when they were out on the trails together.  He likes being the centre of attention and refuses to share it with anyone. 

I think Cal's problem is that he is an extremely intelligent horse but because he is so clever he has a very low boredom threshold.  you have to realise this very soon or it could cause problems.  He needs to be kept occcupied with lots of toys and lots of riding, not just schooling but hacks as well.  As Cal is a committee horse as opposed to a horse bred and raised to compete, a lot of ground work lies ahead.  He has a nice jump and very smooth paces.  He has shown an aptitude for showjumping and could do very well as he is big for his breed but a lot of schooling and learning lies ahead.  Cal also has a beautiful pedigree with famous names like *Princip, Mammona, Aswan, Drug, Salon and the etheral Papova!

Somwhere along the line, *Caliente found himself in the Committee where he waited and ate till his hearts content for a new owner. She kept him for a while them placed him up for sale. When we spotted this grey stallion we felt sorry for the rolly polly old man. After much debate we finally decided to just go for it and placed a bid. He came home with us that very day. After he was settled into his stall at the Stud we began doing research on him.

Imagine our surprise to find out that this chunky old timer used to be a top class Jumper! A little more research revieled that he was in fact a grandson of the wondfrul mare Papova! a Winner at the Nations Cup as a yearling, and desendant of Salon! His show record was impressive to say the least. With some time and a lot of exercise, not to mention some cutting back on his grain, *Cal shed much of the extra weight and began to exhibit a very strong Russian physique! With the loss of so much extra pounds he once again regained the spring in his step. His career as a high level jumper was once more put into motion. Physically sound and mentally sharp his return to the jumping arena was a success! All that was left to do was find the right rider.

*Cal is a very easy keeper. We have to be careful with his intake of food because he can quickly become over fed and once again regain extra weight. To us this just means he's a very hardy horse who enjoys his feed. He has the Russian Temperment; quick and passionate but he calms down and soon everything is forgiven.

He has sired for us three babies: I Will Command WS a 2008 Chestnut colt out of the Polish mare *Calidora PASB who won the prestigous 2009 Dressage at Devon Colts of 2009 halter class. Rachmaninov WS (ex. OWA Zynfandel) *Aladdinn - who will start his racing career in September 2009 as all our young stock do.
